BIENVENIDOS!
My name is Ivan Diaz. I was born and raised in District 29. My parents were migrant farm workers in the 90’s and settled in Grand Rapids after following the grow season throughout the south and east coast. I graduated from Godfrey-Lee Public Schools, earned my Associates Degree from Grand Rapids Community College, and graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science. I am a current graduate student pursuing my Masters in Public Affairs at Indiana University. I have been involved with the rising labor movement that we are witnessing grow across the country, helping to organize the Lake Michigan Credit Union Workers Alliance (LMCUWA), one of the first credit union labor unions in the nation.
In 2022, I was elected to the Kent County Board of Commissioners to represent District 20 for a 2-year term, serving Southwest Grand Rapids and north Wyoming. I have frequently worked locally to ensure progressive voices and values are included in campaigns and policy. As a union rep, I have been focused on helping unionize workers in Michigan. Now I am running for the 29th District in the Michigan state Senate, building on my representation of real, working people in our community.
My story is one of service to the values and kitchen-table concerns of everyday working people in West Michigan.
Let's continue the story - together.
THE ISSUES I'M STANDING ON
THE RIGHT TO ORGANIZE
Whether it's unions, community gatherings, protests, or any other form of people coming together over the issues that unite them I believe we have a duty to protect that.
I support the federal PRO Act and our labor unions. I would like to implement a Michigan version of this act.
I oppose Michigan House Bill 4664, attempting to jail organizers who take to the streets.
SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE
Single-payer healthcare for Michigan means a healthcare system funded by our people for our people.
Advocacy group Michigan for Single Payer Healthcare outlines what this can look like in our state.
I will work with anyone to make this a reality for our state.
Education for All in Michigan
Governor Whitmer's Sixty by 30 Goal which includes Futures for Frontliners, Michigan Reconnect, and MI Student aid is just the beginning.
Trades, apprenticeships, and the pursuit of education should be for every Michigander.
I will work to continue to open education pathways and remove barriers for every person who wants these skills.
Statewide Funded Childcare
We're working hard in Michigan to provide funded Preschool for All four-year-olds through programs like Kent ISD Great Start to Readiness and Head Start.
We can expand this work into childcare for all ages, so that families can thrive.
Lack of access to childcare means a disproportionate number of caregivers are not able to enter the workforce.
Our childcare providers deserve fair wages, access to continuing education, and financial support to operate.
Accessible Housing
Rent is too high.
Rising housing costs tacked on top of mortgages are making them unattainable.
Housing costs should not exceed 30% of a household budget. That's including hidden fees.
We need actionable items to make housing attainable, including:
- Work to remove statewide ban on rent control
- Zoning reform to remove red tape for building
- Changing income thresholds for qualifying housing programs
- Homeowner's insurance premium regulation
- Remove barriers for approval to rent from private landlords
RANKED CHOICE VOTING
Ranked Choice Voting
allows voters rank candidates in order, instead of all or nothing voting. Top candidates get ranked and votes are redistributed until a winner is declared.
This puts more power into the electorates hands.
A New Michigan Constitution
every 16 years, Michiganders vote to revise the Michigan Constitution, which has not been revised since 1963.
The next opportunity is in 2026. If approved, a constitutional convention will be held where elected delegates will work to bring the new constitution forward.
You can learn more about the impact here.
TAX EQUALITY
Our community knows what it looks like when billionaires don't pay their fair share.
Graduated income taxes will put more take-home pay in the pockets of working people while continuing to fund the initiatives we value in Michigan.
PUBLIC OWNERSHIP OF UTILITIES
Utility costs continue to rise for households.
This is the hidden cost of living that doesn't get included in income conversations.
Utilities in Michigan have too many ties to our leaders.
We need to create pathways for public utility ownership and to remove any financial relationships that create a conflict of interest.
MONEY OUT OF MICHIGAN POLITICS
Three different ballot initiatives are working to get special interest money out of Michigan politics.
From our cities to our state-level leaders, no one who benefits financially from decisions should be able to make donations.
ICE OUT OF OUR CITIES, END POLICE BRUTALITY
Police violence in our cities continues to compound, and now, they integrate with federal agencies like ICE to disappear, kidnap, and murder our community members.
We call for community control of police and absolutely NO cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE.
NO WAR WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS
Our Michigan tax dollars go to fund various forms of war, whether it be through business incubators attracting weapons manufacturers with tax incentives or investing public funds into war bonds. We don't want our money going to fund bombs.
Help bring long-overdue change to our BROKEN systems.
The Ivan Diaz Campaign is committed to grassroots funding and donations, NOT PAC money.
Our campaign is run by a volunteer Community Governance Committee made up of people from District 29.
You can show your support with a donation of $29, today.
